Canine progesterone (cProg) assay

Linear range 1–50 ng/mL
Sample volume 75 µL
Sample types Whole blood, serum or plasma (kit-specific)
Time to result Approximately 15 minutes
Calibration None required — lot data on the kit ID chip
Method Fluorescence immunoassay
Progesterone thresholds are specific to the assay that produced them; values from a different analyzer or laboratory are not directly interchangeable — see why your analyzer’s chart doesn’t match the textbook.

Precision, independently tested

Tested by MR Diagnostic Services, December 2025. Figures apply to the kit lot examined and shift between lots. The full report, including correlation and agreement to a reference analyzer, is linked below.

MeasureResultReport rating
Same-sample precision (CV)6.90% average, 4.90–9.21% across concentrationsExcellent
Lot-to-lot precision (CV)8.49% average across 5 separate kit lotsGood to excellent
Reportable range1–50 ng/mL

Repeatability is what a breeding decision actually rests on: the call is read from the shape of one dog’s curve on one instrument, not from matching a laboratory number. Lot-to-lot stability was measured across five kit lots, which most point-of-care validation studies do not test at all.

Read the number on this analyzer’s scale

This instrument reads higher than a laboratory reference, so published textbook thresholds do not transfer directly. On the Finecare scale, estimated ovulation falls at 8–15 ng/mL and the fertile range at 15–40 ng/mL. Time from the chart supplied with your kit lot, and see why thresholds belong to the assay that produced them.

The bundle arrives with everything already matched to the analyzer — there is no calibration procedure and no reagent to prepare.

Unpack and check

Check the contents against the list in the Product Details tab before you start. The analyzer, test kit and each accessory are packed together; the kit ID chip travels with the test kit, not the analyzer.

Getting started

  1. Set it up
Place the analyzer on a level surface out of direct sunlight, connect the 15V adapter and power on. Charge it fully before the first trip away from an outlet.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi (optional)
Join your network from the touchscreen if you want results available off the device. The analyzer runs entirely offline as well.
  3. Load the lot data
Insert the kit ID chip supplied with your test kit. This carries the lot curve, so there is no calibration step — repeat it whenever you open a new lot.
  4. Choose a test mode
Standard runs one sample at a time. Quick Test lets you start several samples at once during a busy morning.
  5. Prepare and run the sample
Follow the package insert for your kit — serum/plasma kits are spun first, whole-blood kits are run straight from the draw. Load the strip and start the test.
  6. Read and store the result
A quantitative value appears in about 15 minutes and is saved on the device (50,000 results) where it can be reviewed or printed.
The package insert is the authority
Every kit ships with a package insert giving the exact volumes, timings and handling steps for that lot. Where it differs from this summary, follow the insert. Finecare technical support is included with your purchase if anything is unclear.
Everything needed to run canine progesterone in-house, in one box — the Finecare PetLife Pro-DX analyzer plus the test kit, centrifuge, vortex mixer, pipette and draw supplies. Around $509 of accessories at retail, for $300 more than the analyzer on its own.
